Canon EOS 1300D Digital SLR Review

Canon is a famous brand and created a mark of its own in the camera industry. There are several fans of the brand notwithstanding the completion.

As brought out in our review of the Canon EOS 1200D, up to 3-4 years back, Canon DSLRs were not affordable.

The introduction of the affordable DSLRs by the company had opened the doors to a wider market and all of a sudden, one such camera was reachable for many.

The Canon EOS 1300D is an upgrade of its previous model with additions of some handy features which we will come to later.

So if you are a beginner, an infrequent photographer and a Canon fan on a tight budget, the Canon EOS 1300D is worth considering.

Design and Build

    The Good

  1. The Canon EOS 1300D is light and compact. It weighs only 485 grams (just 5 grams more than the 1200D) giving you portability and convenience.
  1. Like its predecessor, despite being lightweight, it does not feel flimsy and is sturdily built.
  1. The basic settings like aperture, shutter speed and ISO level are displayed at the bottom which is very convenient.
  1. The Canon EOS 1300D is easy to use and comfortable.
  1. LCD screen is of excellent resolution.

    The Not So Good

  1. The LCD at the back is fixed and cannot be moved making selfie clicking impossible.

Image Quality

    The Good

  1. Sharp and bright images are produced in ideal light conditions.
  1. Great colors and lot of detail in snaps clicked during day.
  1. Even during early morning and evening time, the images produced are of good quality.
  1. Good results when clicking objects in motion such as sports.

    The Not So Good

  1. At higher low and extremely low-lit conditions, the noise becomes significant but not as much as the 1200D thanks to the upgraded DGIC image processor.

Video Quality

    The Good

  1. Clear and sharp videos in decent light conditions with rich colours.
  1. Motion photography of cars and sports is very good.
  1. Night video results are best in class.

    The Not So Good

  1. Slow autofocus like the 1200D in spite of image processor upgrade.

Agility and Speed

    The Good

  1. The Canon EOS 1300D is quite fast as a still camera. It has a good autofocus when shooting in still mode.

    The Not So Good

  1. The speed of 3 frames per second makes it slow for taking shots in succession.
  1. As brought out earlier, autofocus in video mode leaves a lot to be desired.

Battery Life

Battery life is good. The Canon EOS 1300D can easily take 500 shots without flash and slightly above 400 shots if 50% of the shots are taken with flash.

The Canon EOS 1300D is not much of an upgrade from the Canon 1200D.

It has, however, wifi and NFC which is a great plus point.

An upgrade from the DGIC 4 to DGIC4+ has also helped in the quality of night photography.

If you already own a Canon 1200D, it’s not worth upgrading to the 1300D. Otherwise..

Consider this camera if you are learning photography, prefer good image quality, great video quality, wifi and NFC.

The bonus is, of course, the pride of a Canon in hand.
