Canon EOS 1200D Digital SLR Review

Canon is a very well-known brand in the field of cameras. At one point of time it was unrivaled.

In the past, the good canon cameras, especially DSLRs were just not affordable.

Thanks to the competition from Nikon, Canon has rolled out some affordable DSLRs well suited for beginners.

The Canon EOS 1200D is one such DSLR rolled out by Canon which became an instant hit and has been the go to camera for many.

While canon faces stiff competition from its rival, Nikon, it is still the loved brand of a vast majority of die hard photographers.

So if you are a fan of Canon and on a tight budget, the Canon EOS 1200D is worth considering.

Design and Build

    The Good

  1. The Canon EOS 1200D is light and compact. It weighs only 15.3 ounces which means that will be a lesser burden while travelling.
  1. Notwithstanding the less weight, it does not feel flimsy and is sturdily built.
  1. All the important settings like shutter speed, aperture, ISO level, etc are conveniently displayed at the bottom which is helpful.
  1. The camera is easy to use and comfortable.

    The Not So Good

  1. The LCD at the back is fixed and cannot be moved. So, selfies are not possible.

Image Quality

    The Good

  1. Good and clear images are produced in optimal light conditions.
  1. The pictures give excellent detail and great colour reproduction in these optimal light conditions.
  1. Rich colours will make you feel pleased with the results.
  1. Even in lesser light conditions, the images produced are sharp.
  1. Good results when clicking objects in motion such as sports.

    The Not So Good

  1. At higher ISO settings (low and extremely low lit conditions), the noise is very prominent and more compared to the Nikon entry level DSLR cameras.
  1. In shots at night chroma noise (coloured dots) are prominent.

Video Quality

    The Good

  1. Sharp and clear videos in optimal light conditions with great reproduction of colours.
  1. Motion photography good and better than most DSLRs in this price range.
  1. Night photography the best amongst its rivals.

    The Not So Good

  1. Unable to focus quickly and this can be really annoying if you take a lot of videos.

Agility and Speed

    The Good

  1. The Canon EOS 1200D is reasonably fast as a camera. It has a good autofocus but not as good as the Nikon D3300.

    The Not So Good

  1. Shoots at only 3 frames per second making it sluggish for taking shots in quick succession.
  1. Slow autofocus in video mode.

Battery Life

Battery life is good. The Canon EOS 1200D can easily take 500 shots without flash and slightly above 400 shots if 50% of the shots are taken with flash.

Conclusion

As a beginner, you get the reliability and quality of a Canon at a budget price.

The image quality and ergonomics offered at this price make it a value for money camera.

While it certainly lacks the agility and autofocus of the Nikon D3300, it does give you a decent amount of video footage capability as compared to the Nikon’s limitation of shooting only upto 10 minutes of video.

Though you may miss the quality of Canon’s high end cameras, the ownership experience of the 1200 D will overall be very pleasant.

The Canon EOS 1200D is ideally suited for beginners and casual photographers who desire quality at a reasonable price and with the brand assurance of a Canon.
